Zach Hill’s ‘Sacto Smile’

When it comes to names in rock and roll that you probably don’t know, one of the greatest is Zach Hill.  This man drums like a maniac to no exaggeration. Sacramento resident and drummer-half of the noise rock duo Hella, he has worked alongside artists like Marnie Stern and Wavves as well as recently collaborating with comic book genius Alan Moore. This man pounds like no other using only a single pedal and bass drum.

There are few out there who can drum with such ferocity. Every drummer-friend I’ve introduced to his work has been mind blown. Check out this video of his live performance; you too will be boggled.

His first album, Astrological Straits, is a must have for noise and punk enthusiasts for its combination of Hella-esque noise insanity and electronic fuzz. Zach’s second solo album, Face Tat, is due out on Sargeant House Records on October 19th. The new record sees him teaming up with No Age, Devendra Banhart, Guillermo Scott Herren of Prefuse 73 and Greg Saunier of Deerhoof.

Judging by this feature list and previous rocking history, the new album should be making great noise this Halloween. Check out the video for the No Age featuring track ‘Sacto Smile’, directed by Hill (who doubles as a visual artist) and Sean Stout.
